National Service Scheme
"NSS provides students with opportunities for serving the Community, Nation and Society. It also provides them with an opportunity to interact with people around the campus creatively and constructively and to put their educations to concrete social use. Hence all should come forward in the field of social work/service and serve the nation with dedication and honesty."
. The National Service Scheme (NSS) was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, by Dr. V.K. R.V. Rao, the father of NSS on the birth centenary year of the father of the Nation. Hence the idea of involving students in the task of national service dates back to the times of Mahatma Gandhi who tried to impress upon his student audience that they should always keep before them their supreme social responsibility. The first duty of the students should be to prepare themselves for the service of the community. It (Scheme) is also essential for the overall development of the personality of the students.
The overall aim of the NSS is service to the community and the Nation to awaken the social consciousness of the students. The objectives are sought to be achieved by enabling the students to:
The motto of NSS is “NOT ME, BUT YOU” which expresses the essence of democratic living; uphold the need for selfless social service and appreciations of other person’s point of view. “Not Me, But You” define the philosophy of NSS. The welfare of every individual is dependent on the welfare of society; hence, every volunteer must strive for the betterment of society. .
The symbol represents the cycle of creation, preservation and signifies continuity as well as change with continuous striving of the NSS for social transformation, upliftment and integration. The National Service Scheme (NSS) symbol is based on the giant Rath Wheel of the Konark Sun Temple in Orissa, India. The wheel's eight bars represent the 24 hours of a day, and its navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind. The Red colour in the badge indicates that the NSS volunteers are full of blood i.e. lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit.
Every year 24th September is celebrated as NSS Day with appropriate programmes and activities. NSS is a program that strives to develop each volunteer's personality via community service. It helps volunteers understand the community in which they serve their links to that community, and to build a strong feeling of responsibility towards the advancement of society. NSS Day is a festival honoring each volunteer's selfless contributions to the benefit of all.
There are two types of activities/programmes under the NSS, these are as follows:-
An NSS volunteer has to put 120 hours of social work in one year or 240 hours in two years of different programmes/activities and special camping. He/She should be fully conversant with the objectives of the NSS. An NSS volunteer, after completing 240 hours in two years of regular and special activities becomes entitled to an NSS Certificate.
By and large he/she (P.O.) plays the role of an organizer, an educator, a coordinator, a supervisor, an administrator and a public relations person to improve the quality and magnitude of the NSS programme in the college.
National Service Scheme (NSS) provides ‘out of classroom’ student-centric activity wherein teachers only provide guidance and act as coordinators while the students are the main actors. Students contribute through service to the community and conservation of the physical environment. It also inculcates in students a sense of leadership and teamwork enabling them to identify and resolve community issues. Hence leadership, collectivism, social responsibility, activism and community participation all are at work at the same time. All these attributes are what make a student a complete social citizen. These activities also bring them close to the social and environmental realities. In view of the importance of NSS in nation-building our endeavour is to strengthen NSS by increasing participation of students through widening the scope and increasing the number of events organized by NSS unit of college.
